Words, characters, and reading time

PDF Word Count

You can count the words in a PDF without uploading the file to a server, and with no account. PDF Word Count reads the selectable text on your device and reports words, characters, sentences, and reading time for the whole file or a page range. Scanned pages without a text layer count as zero until you run PDF OCR. Files can be up to 100 MB and 2,000 pages.

Can I count words in a PDF without uploading it?

EditPDF AI rebuilds each page’s reading order from the PDF text layer, then counts words, characters with and without spaces, and sentences page by page. Hyphenated words and contractions count once, Chinese and Japanese characters count individually, and Thai, Lao, Khmer, and Burmese text uses the browser’s word segmenter. The source PDF is read-only and is never modified.

Practical examples

Common ways people use this tool in real documents and day-to-day workflows.

Students and academics

Check essays, theses, and journal submissions against a word limit, leaving out the title page, references, or appendix with a page range.

Translators and editors

Estimate the size of a translation or editing job from the word and character counts before quoting.

Writers and content teams

Confirm the length of reports, white papers, and manuscripts, and see how long they take to read or present.

Legal and compliance teams

Verify filings and submissions that must stay under a word or page limit, with a per-page CSV for the record.

When to use PDF Word Count

Count words, characters, sentences, and reading time in the selectable text of a PDF or a page range.

When another tool fits

The PDF is a scan or photo, so its pages have no text layer to count yet. Use PDF OCR →

Why is my count different from Microsoft Word?

Counting rules differ between tools. Headers, footers, page numbers, footnotes, and text in figures are counted when they are selectable PDF text, and a PDF may split or join words differently from the source document. Use the page range to leave out front matter or references and compare like with like.

Three simple steps

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose your PDF

Select one PDF up to 100 MB and 2,000 pages. Each page’s text layer is read locally in your browser.

  2. 2

    Review the counts

See total words, characters, sentences, average words per page, and reading and speaking time, plus a breakdown for every page.

  3. 3

    Narrow the range or export

Set the first and last page to leave out front matter or references, copy the summary, or download the per-page counts as CSV.

PDF Word Count vs. doing it manually

Open this comparison if you are deciding between the browser workflow and a manual process.

Compare the workflows
Doing it manually

Copy text out of the PDF into a word processor and hope the line breaks paste cleanly.

With PDF Word Count

Words are counted straight from the PDF text layer, page by page.

Doing it manually

Delete the cover and references by hand to count only the main text.

With PDF Word Count

Choose a page range and the totals update instantly.

Doing it manually

Work out reading time with a calculator.

With PDF Word Count

Reading and speaking time are estimated alongside the counts.

Worked example: Check an essay against a word limit

An illustrative workflow. Your document may produce a different result.

Starting document
A 14-page thesis chapter exported to PDF with a title page and four pages of references at the end.
What to do
Count the whole file, then set the page range to pages 2 to 10 to leave out the title page and references.
Expected result
A total word count for the main text, characters with and without spaces, sentences, and an estimated reading time, plus words for each page.
How to check
Spot-check one page against its visible text. Pages listed without selectable text are scans or images and count as zero.
Important limitation
Only selectable PDF text is counted. Headers, footers, and page numbers on counted pages are included, and the total can differ slightly from a word processor's count.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?
A word is any run of characters between spaces that contains a letter or number, so hyphenated words such as “well-known” and contractions such as “don’t” count once. Punctuation on its own is not counted. Chinese and Japanese characters count individually.
Why does a page show no selectable text?
The page is probably a scan, a photo, or text converted to outlines, so it has no text layer to read. Run PDF OCR to add a searchable text layer, then count the OCR copy.
Can I count only some pages?
Yes. Enter the first and last page to include. Totals, reading time, and the CSV export update to that range, and the per-page table fades pages outside it.
Are headers, footers, and footnotes included?
Yes, when they are selectable text on a counted page. A PDF does not mark which text is a header, so page numbers and running heads are counted with the body text.
Why is the total different from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Each program uses slightly different counting rules, and exporting to PDF can split or join words, move footnotes, or add page numbers. Small differences are normal; use the page range to compare the same content.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, a typical silent reading speed for non-fiction. Speaking time assumes 130 words per minute for presenting aloud.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The file is opened, read, and counted inside your browser, and the CSV is created on your device. The source PDF is not changed.
Can I count words in a password-protected PDF?
Unlock it first with the Unlock PDF tool using the password you are authorized to use, then count the unlocked copy.
