What is a PDF password lock?

A PDF password lock encrypts a PDF file so that anyone who tries to open it must enter the correct password first. Without the password, the content is completely unreadable — even if someone obtains a copy of the file. EditPDF AI uses AES-256 encryption, the strongest level available in the PDF specification, equivalent to the standard used by banks and government agencies.

Beyond an open password, you can also set a permissions password that restricts what a recipient can do with the document — preventing printing, copying text, or making edits — even after they have opened it.
