What is a PDF compressor?

A PDF compressor reduces the file size of a PDF document by re-encoding embedded images at lower quality and removing redundant data. A 25 MB scan of a brochure can often be brought down to 2–3 MB with no visible difference on screen — making it suitable for email, web upload, or cloud storage.

PDF compression is especially useful when a service imposes a file-size limit (many email providers cap attachments at 10–25 MB). EditPDF AI's compressor runs directly in your browser using WebAssembly, so your document is never uploaded to any external server.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I reduce a PDF file size?+
It depends on the content. PDFs with lots of high-resolution images can be reduced by 50–90%. Text-only PDFs typically shrink by 10–30%.
Does compression affect text quality?+
No. Text is vector data and is not affected by image compression. Only embedded raster images are re-encoded at a lower quality.
Can I compress a PDF that is already compressed?+
Yes, but gains will be smaller. If the images were already compressed at creation time, our tool will apply further compression — though the saving may only be a few percent.
Is the compression lossless or lossy?+
Our default modes use lossy image compression to achieve the largest file size reduction. For presentations or archival documents where image quality must be perfect, choose Light compression.
Does my file get uploaded to your servers?+
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your PDF is never sent to any server.
