Compress a PDF to Under 1MB
A 1MB cap is a genuinely aggressive target — tighter than the usual email attachment limits, and often specific to application portals, school submission systems, or forms with a hard upload ceiling. For most multi-page or image-containing PDFs, hitting it means the Maximum preset (96 DPI, 0.50 JPEG quality), which produces the smallest file the tool offers but the most visible loss of image detail.
It's worth being realistic before you spend time on this: a large scanned document or a PDF with many high-detail images may not fit under 1MB at any setting without losing legibility, simply because there's a floor to how much a page image can shrink before it stops being readable. A short, mostly-text document with few images will get there easily; a 40-page scanned packet may not, regardless of preset.
If Maximum still isn't enough, the next lever isn't a more aggressive setting — it's reducing what's in the file itself. Splitting a large document and submitting only the required pages (via PDF Splitter or Extract Pages) often gets further toward a strict size cap than compressing an unnecessarily long document as hard as possible.
