Can I edit PDF metadata without uploading?

You can edit PDF metadata without uploading the file to a server, and with no account. Edit PDF Metadata changes the title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, and creation date on your device, and rewrites matching XMP metadata. Pages are not changed. Files can be up to 100 MB.

EditPDF AI loads the current document properties into a form so you can change, fill in, or clear each one. When the PDF also stores XMP metadata, the tool writes a matching packet so viewers that prefer XMP show the same values. Only the properties are rewritten; text, images, links, forms, and bookmarks are left as they are.

Practical examples

Common ways people use this tool in real documents and day-to-day workflows.

Website and content publishers

Give downloadable PDFs a real title instead of a file name or "Microsoft Word - Document1", so browser tabs and search results read correctly.

Researchers and students

Set the title, author, and keywords that journals, repositories, and reference managers read from submitted PDFs.

Businesses and freelancers

Put the right company or author name on proposals, reports, and invoices exported from shared templates.

Librarians and archivists

Fix missing or wrong properties so document libraries sort and search files correctly.

At a glance

When to use Edit PDF Metadata

Change or fill in document properties such as the title, author, subject, and keywords in a copy of the PDF.

When another tool fits

You want to strip hidden properties, XMP, and document identifiers instead of editing them. Use Remove PDF Metadata →

Why does my PDF viewer still show the old title?

Some viewers read XMP metadata before the document information dictionary, and some cache recently opened files. This tool rewrites both, so reopen the saved copy rather than the original. If a browser tab still shows the file name, the viewer may ignore the display-title preference.

Three simple steps

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose your PDF

Select a PDF up to 100 MB. Its current title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, and creation date are loaded into the form.

  2. 2

    Change the properties

Edit any field, clear the ones you do not want, and choose whether to set the modification date to now and show the title in viewer windows.

  3. 3

    Save and check

Download the updated copy, then open its Properties dialog in your PDF viewer to confirm the new values. Your original file is not changed.

Optional comparison

Edit PDF Metadata vs. doing it manually

Open this comparison if you are deciding between the browser workflow and a manual process.

Compare the workflows
Doing it manually

Buy desktop PDF software just to reach its Document Properties dialog.

With Edit PDF Metadata

Edit every standard property free in your browser.

Doing it manually

Change the information dictionary and find Acrobat still shows the old XMP title.

With Edit PDF Metadata

Matching XMP metadata is rewritten together with the properties.

Doing it manually

Re-export the original document from Word to fix its title.

With Edit PDF Metadata

Change the title of the finished PDF without touching its pages.

Worked example: Replace an exported file's placeholder title

An illustrative workflow. Your document may produce a different result.

Starting document
A PDF exported from a word processor whose Title property reads "Microsoft Word - Document1.docx".
What to do
Open the PDF, type the real title and author, keep the modification date update on, and save the copy.
Expected result
A PDF whose document properties show the new title and author, with the same pages as before.
How to check
Open the saved copy's Properties dialog in your PDF viewer and confirm the title, author, and keywords. Check that the viewer tab shows the new title.
Important limitation
Editing properties does not change text printed on the pages, and it invalidates existing digital signatures. Custom XMP properties are not carried over.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Which PDF properties can I edit?
Title, author, subject, keywords, creator application, PDF producer, and creation date. You can also set the modification date to the time you save, and ask viewers to show the title instead of the file name.
Does editing metadata change the pages?
No. Only the document properties are rewritten. Page text, images, links, form fields, and bookmarks are kept as they are.
What happens to XMP metadata?
If the PDF already has an XMP packet, it is replaced with one that matches your edits, because some viewers such as Adobe Acrobat read XMP first. Custom XMP properties beyond the standard fields are not carried over. PDF/A and PDF/UA identification entries are kept.
Can I remove a property completely?
Yes. Clear the field before saving and the property is removed from the file rather than saved as an empty value. Use Remove PDF Metadata if you want to strip everything, including XMP and document identifiers.
Will editing metadata invalidate a digital signature?
Yes. Saving rewrites the PDF, so an existing cryptographic signature will no longer validate. The tool warns you when it detects a signature and asks you to confirm first.
Can I edit metadata in a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Unlock the PDF with the password you are authorized to use, edit its properties, and then protect it again if needed.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is read, edited, saved, and verified entirely in your browser.
Why does my viewer still show the old title?
Make sure you opened the saved copy, not the original. Some viewers also cache recently opened files, and some browser viewers ignore the display-title preference and show the file name.
