How to Convert a PDF to Grayscale or Black and White

Written and fact-checked by The EditPDF AI Team

Whether you can get a grayscale PDF today depends entirely on where you're starting: scanning a physical page in grayscale is directly supported; converting a PDF you already have from color to grayscale is not currently a dedicated feature.

Scanning a physical document in grayscale

If you're starting from a physical page rather than an existing PDF, Scan to PDF includes a grayscale capture filter alongside Enhanced and Black & White modes — you choose it before capturing, and the page is saved in grayscale directly.

  1. 1Open Scan to PDF and select the Grayscale filter from the scan mode options.
  2. 2Capture the page with your phone or webcam camera as usual.
  3. 3Save — the resulting PDF page is already grayscale, with no separate conversion step needed.

Do you already have a color PDF you want converted to grayscale?

This is the harder case, and it's worth being direct about it: converting an existing color PDF to grayscale isn't currently a dedicated feature. The grayscale option lives specifically in the scanning capture step, not as a standalone file-conversion tool.

The nearest available option

If the goal is simply a smaller, less colorful file for printing or sharing, PDF Compressor re-renders every page as a JPEG at your chosen quality level — it won't strip color specifically, but it does reduce file size, which is often the actual underlying reason grayscale gets requested in the first place.

When grayscale actually matters

  • ·Printing costs — black-and-white printing is typically cheaper per page than color, even for a page that was only ever black text
  • ·Consistency across scans — a batch of documents scanned by different people on different devices looks more uniform in grayscale
  • ·Reducing file size — dropping color information can shrink a file, though direct compression is usually a bigger factor than color alone
